Adult Life Program

UCSF Parnassus

Description
Volunteers interact with patients and families and assist staff in reducing the stress which can be caused by hospitalization, illness and pain. Volunteers gain experience of being part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team by rounding on new patients, delivering amenities to alleviate boredom, and giving generously of their time at the bedside. Volunteers may also assist with clerical support on the nursing units. Volunteers serve Monday-Friday afternoons.

Adult Surgical Admissions

Description
Volunteers escort patients and families to Pre-Op areas and interact with clinicians and staff in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Volunteers interact with adult patients and families while the patient is waiting for surgery, or while families are waiting for patient recovery in the Surgical Waiting Area. Volunteers may also provide administrative support. Opportunities are available weekdays, 10am-2pm.

Animal Assisted Therapy - Parnassus, Mission Bay, & Mt. Zion

Mission Bay & Parnassus

Description

In conjunction with the SPCA, Animal Assisted Therapy volunteers and their dogs round on specific patient units, visiting with patients and facilitating healing and motivation by sharing the love of companion animals. Child Life Services: Art Therapy

Description
Art therapy volunteers will support the art therapist in utilizing art to promote normal growth and development of patients and families with the aim of minimizing stress realted to illness and hospitalization. Volunteers will assist in facilitation of Open Art Studio and/or Art Group. Responsibilities also include assisting with set-up and clean-up of the programming space.

Playroom volunteers play with patients and their siblings, assist with set up and clean up, participate in arts, crafts, and recreational activities and help to maintain a safe and welcoming environment. Volunteers also help provide toys, board games, puzzles, books, and craft materials to patients at bedside, particularly those who are unable to leave their rooms. Child Life Services: School Program

UCSF Mission Bay

Description
School Program volunteers assist with educational activities in the classroom and tutor patients at bedside and provide educationally-themed diversion and play for school-aged patients and siblings, adding to their well-being and comfort. Volunteers maintain cleanliness of space, including helping with cleaning of School Room materials, assist with recruiting, sign-in, and escorting of patients/siblings to and from their rooms. In addition, tutoring opportunities are available in the outpatient Pediatric Dialysis Clinic. Volunteers serve Monday-Friday, 9:15am-3pm.

Volunteers interact with pediatric families during a weekly scrapbooking group, by offering assistance in a supportive atmosphere for parents to engage in scrapbooking while interacting with their peers. Description
Teen Lounge volunteers interact with patients 13 years and older in the Teen Lounge, assist with set up and clean up, participate in arts & crafts and recreational activities and help to maintain a safe and engaging environment. The Teen Lounge has a foosball table, a pool table, computers, a PS3 game system, Wii, board games, magazines and music for teens. Volunteers serve evenings and weekends.

Falls and Safety Team (FAST): Parnassus

Description
A specialized team of volunteers makes daily rounds on patients identified as high risk for falls. Each volunteer is trained by a clinical nurse to assist patients regarding safety and falls precautions. All volunteers in this component of service must be comfortable interacting and conversing with a diverse patient population. Volunteers serve Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm.

Medical Surgical ICU Program

UCSF Parnassus

Description
Volunteers will be participating in non-clinical activities alongside nurses, doctors, patients and families. Volunteers provide companionship to ICU patients and families and offer amenities to them such as arts and crafts supplies, games, newspapers, blankets, etc. This program is a unique opportunity to observe and experience the workflow within this ICU.

No One Dies Alone (NODA)

Volunteers would have the opportunity to provide much-needed companionship to persons who feel isolated in the final days and hours of their lives, as well as offer respite for families who need a brief "break" from keeping vigil at the bedside of their dying loved ones. People who are interested in palliative care, hospice, and end-of-life issues, and those who wish to learn about social work, spiritual care, and other allied human service professions would gain valuable direct experience in addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of dying persons. Opportunities for this "on-call" role are available every day of the week, morning thru night.
