Adult Life Program

Description
Volunteers interact with patients and families and assist staff in reducing the stress which can be caused by hospitalization, illness and pain. Volunteers gain experience of being part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team by rounding on new patients, delivering amenities to alleviate boredom, and giving generously of their time at the bedside. Volunteers may also assist with clerical support on the nursing units. Volunteers serve Monday-Friday afternoons.

Art for Recovery - Mission Bay

Art for Recovery provides a safe environment where adults can express the intense feelings that arise in life-threatening illness.  Current projects including Healing Through Writing, Murals in the Clinics, SPIRIT groups, Healing Garden Music Series, Breast Cancer Quilts Project, and Firefly Project. Volunteers help patients connect with their creative spirit through art, journal writing, poetry, music and quilt blocking. Artistic ability is not necessary to participate. Cancer Resource Center - Mission Bay

UCSF Mission Bay

Description
The Ida and Joseph Friend Cancer Resource Center is part of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center which is one of only 19 such designated centers in the country. It provides patients, families and caregivers with access to information about treatment options, emotional support and community resources. The Center also hosts a diverse range of support groups, workshops and movement classes, and maintains a library of books and other media. All CRC programs are free.

The CRC is mostly funded by donations and grants, and depends heavily on volunteers. Duties vary widely, including restocking and distributing patient education materials throughout the Cancer Center, assisting patients who call and walk-in, helping patients find resources to match their needs, updating various databases, performing online research and special projects. Volunteers provide patients in all stages of cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery with a friendly atmosphere and helpful attitude.

Volunteers serve seven days a week.

People who are interested in this role must have received the rite of confirmation and be in full union with the Roman Catholic Church; they must be commissioned Eucharistic Ministers by their own parish; they must undergo training to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion; and they must present a recommendation letter to UCSF from the priest at their home parish attesting to these requirements. Opportunities are available every day of the week at both Parnassus and Mission Bay hospitals, and volunteers who can commit to a regular weekly shift would be particularly appreciated.

Medical Surgical ICU Program

UCSF Parnassus

Description
Volunteers provide companionship to ICU patients and families and provide amenities to them such as arts and crafts supplies, games, newspapers, blankets, etc. Volunteers also help patients and families with ordering meals, checking out iPads, and inviting families and patients to participate in feedback and recognition programs such as waiting room surveys and SHINE recognition cards for nursing staff. In addition, volunteers help to increase the availability of current Patient & Visitor Services such as the "Brew Crew," "Music is Good Medicine," and other patient amenity support services (DVD players and movies, laptops, and audio books).

No One Dies Alone (NODA)

Volunteers would have the opportunity to provide much-needed companionship to persons who feel isolated in the final days and hours of their lives, as well as offer respite for families who need a brief "break" from keeping vigil at the bedside of their dying loved ones. People who are interested in palliative care, hospice, and end-of-life issues, and those who wish to learn about social work, spiritual care, and other allied human service professions would gain valuable direct experience in addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of dying persons. Opportunities for this "on-call" role are available every day of the week, morning thru night.

OneView: Mission Bay Adult Hospital

UCSF Mission Bay

Description

Volunteers in this role offer a supportive atmosphere to adult patients and family members by providing instruction and tutorials for training on the digital Oneview system. Follow up with families as needed to answer any remaining questions about the system.

Volunteers will develop sensitivity to working with patients and families in an adult care medical setting while learning about the resources provided to patients and families at UCSF through the Oneview patient interaction system. Volunteers in this assignment should be comfortable learning new technology.

Patient Ambassador

Description
Patient Ambassadors will welcome and provide information about the Medical Center to patients and visitors. They will escort Ambulatory Care Center patients and visitors to their appointment locations and service destinations. They may provide walking escort to shuttle bus stops and may assist staff by directing patients/visitors in the event of a fire drill or medical emergency.
